Three weeks until the beginning of school!
(That is if our move doesn't rearrange things...)
I have been diligently working on our curriculum for the upcoming year.
Scott starts 3rd grade, and Mylee begins life as a middle schooler.
6th grade, here she comes!
What we've done so far this summer:
We've been swimming once or twice a week with our good friends
at the Carpenter Village pool.
Maya and Scott, (and Trevor, too)
have had a great time playing and swimming with their friends,
and I have been lucky enough to get to know
two wonderful homeschooling moms, as well.
I have really enjoyed the time I've been able to spend with them
and am happy to call them my friends. :)

Since June 29th, Maya's been hanging out with
a couple of her favorite librarians three times a week at the Cary library,
and we have been enjoying the
free movies at the Beaver Creek Commons theater
in Apex on Wednesdays.
On July 1st,
we took a family vacation to Florida for five days.
We visited Jacksonville but stayed in a motel in Yulee,
& spent most of our time on Amelia Island.
Our 4th of July was spent watching fireworks
at the Fernandina Harbor Marina on Amelia Island.
We got our feet wet at Jacksonville Beach,
but we hung out mostly at Fernandina Beach.

It was an awesome trip!
Maya continues to read like crazy,
racking up an impressive list of books to fill up her reading log
for both the Barnes & Noble & the Wake County Library's
summer reading programs.
Talking Maya into reading is a bit like talking her into breathing. :)
She is making her way through Melissa Marr's Wicked Lovely series,
plus rereading some of her past favorites.
Scott, on the other hand, has not been so excited about reading
in the summer time when there is no school.
He did find the third book in Kate Klimo's Dragon Keepers series called
The Dragon in the Library,which excited him a bit. He really liked the first two.
He's also interested in starting the Secrets of Dripping Fang series,
and has the first two books called,
The Onts, and Treachery and Betrayal at Jolly Days.
Pa Pa, my father in law, has been helping Scott
collect remote control helicopters.

On Friday, he received the third, (the one on the right) of his collection.
This past weekend, he and Steven have been working on the art of flying.
It's harder than it looks!
Scott is very interested in all motorized things,
but has always loved things that fly.
He took part in an Air Academy camp last August,
and loves to fold paper airplanes.
He has a great book with many design ideas,
but he's come up with quite a few on his own as well.

Our upcoming plans:
I have enrolled both kids in
GlaxoSmithKline's Science in the Summer enrichment program,
(otherwise known as SIS).
It is administered by the Morehead Planetarium & Science Center
of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
The theme this year is "Water and Our Oceans",
and it is designed to introduce children to the science of oceanography.
Unfortunately, the classes filled up quickly,
so both Maya and Scott are on the wait lists for their prospective camps.
If they get in, Maya will go on July 20 & 21st for a total of 6 hours,
and Scott will go for the full week of August 2 - 6 for a total of 15 hours.
I am crossing my fingers that there is room for them!
Scott is entering the Bugfest Illustration contest
being held by the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences.
He has to draw a picture of a scientifically realistic
bioluminescent or aquatic insect in its natural surroundings.
We've already checked out several books from the library,
but I don't think he's decided yet on which bug he's going to draw.
The deadline for the contest is August 15th.

My goal for the next three weeks
is to begin to work through on online Spanish program on my own
so that I will be able to help Scott when he starts in August,
and I'd like to find a good typing program for Maya as well.
On a completely uneducational note:
We've watched a bit more television than normal in the past five weeks.
Through Netflix, we've found past seasons of
Buffy the Vampire Slayer and
The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron, Boy Genius.
All of us loved the Jimmy Neutron movie,
and the episodes we've been watching have had all four of us laughing out loud.
(Maya likes to pretend she isn't enjoying them, but it's obvious that she is.)
The kids are generally good about being outside,
but honestly, it's been pretty darn hot here this summer.
Enjoying the t.v. a bit more while staying cool
has been something I haven't fought too hard against.
