There were 24 kids in the league making up 8 teams of three. They played a different team each week and everyone got to hang out with, play against and talk to everyone else. This is Roman. He's way cool. He took Scotty under his wing from the very first day and helped him figure things out. He also really likes the Hurricanes and I learned a lot about hockey during league.
This is Roman's twin brother, R.T. He's also very cool.
This is Scotty's team. These guys had a lot of fun. Scott had only bowled once before he decided to join this league. He bowled an 11 on his first game. By the end of these ten weeks, (and he didn't bowl the last two due to his broken foot,) he'd bowled as high as an 82. Pretty cool, huh?
Maya made a lot of friends in the league, too. This is Ginger. She was a lot of fun to hang out with.
Maya's a pretty consistent bowler. She began with an eight pound ball. Now she uses a nine and the one she has on order is a ten. She just keeps getting better and better at her game.
This is two thirds of Mylee's team. Mike is an incredibly good bowler. We hung out with him a lot during our Friday practice sessions, as well. Caitlin, who completes the team, was gone today unfortunately.
Because today wrapped up the league, the kids celebrated with a pizza party and, of course, bowling. Maya started off bowling in the high 50's, low 60's. This is how she ended up:
(She's in the middle...) Whoo hoo!!! 127!!!! That's her highest score. She actually bowled a 127 last Friday during practice and mentioned that she wished she could bowl as well during league. She got her wish. Pretty darn cool if you ask me.
I wish this picture had turned out better...This is Natalie. She and Maya were in the CHS Spelling Bee together and hit it off. She's the whole reason the kids decided to give the bowling league a try in the first place. She invited Maya to join with her, and we're so glad she did. (Don't you love Mylee's tee?)
Our day wasn't done after bowling...I'd gotten an email from one of Maya and Scott's swim coaches that said the kids needed to wear clothes over their suits and sneakers on their feet to participate in dry land training. This was a bit of a mystery to us. We had not done any dry land training before and I had a sneaking suspicion that it included running...which really did not excite Mylee at all.
Guess what? It did include running.
There is a track that runs around the TAC (Triangle Aquatics Center) building and the kids ran around it...twice. Maya did well, kept up and actually, quite to my surprise, had some good things to say about it when it was all said and done.
The training also included hopping up and down a small hill
and skipping.
Scott rolled his eyes at these exercises. "I could do that," he told me. "Even with my cast on." He was just itching to be out there with the kids. He told me he hopes they do more dry land when he can take part. Six days and counting before he gets that thing off. New WAVE is taking next week off for Wake County's spring break. Scott will have five days recovery time between getting the cast off and when he gets to hop back in the pool. He can hardly wait.
Coach Patrick finished up the dry land training with a yoga move called the plank. (I took this photo through a big window and it didn't work out so well...but you get the idea.) Maya is not a big fan of yoga, and this was not her favorite part of the training. She was dripping sweat and red as a little cherry tomato when they came inside. We got her in her cap and she enjoyed diving into that very cool pool before finishing up her workout with some laps.
In the car on the way home, she was laughing about one of the drills they were asked to practice. They had to keep their arms in streamline, (up above their heads, hands together, arms straight) while on their backs doing the breast stroke kick. Maya is an excellent, strong swimmer, but the breast stroke kick is a bit difficult for her. (She's got to flex those feet and make her kick wider.) She said she felt like a drowning frog.
A cute, red faced drowning frog.
