Being creative in the heat

We've had some pretty hot weather here this week. On Monday and Tuesday we hit temps of over 100 degrees, but we broke a state record on Wednesday. With the heat index, we got up to 112 degrees and that hasn't happened on July 13th since 1986. Every twenty five or so years...that's not too bad, huh?

For North Carolina, the humidity has been really high. We just came back from Florida, though, and I have to say, the humidity isn't an issue for us. We're also pretty creative...we beat the heat in a number of ways.

Building paper airplanes, for one. Not just paper airplanes, though...no...these are the kind that require step by step instructions from a full color book, scissors, tape, glue and a ruler.

After all the measurements had been made, all the cutting done and all the folding taken care of, Scotty had to wait for the glue to dry.

The final result was this really cool bi-plane that not only flies, but does loop de loops. How cool is that?

We've also been working a bit on math on a regular basis. What they don't practice, they tend to forget. What I want to know is where she got those long ol legs from? Oh, and Ramen noodles make sitting down to study math in the summer time a little easier to stomach.

The bowling alley has also been a great way to beat the heat. Seriously. If I don't bowl with the kids, I'm blue and shivering within about 30 minutes and wishing for a down parka. They don't just cool buildings down here...they down right refrigerate them. It feels great, though, when you're bowling.

Ice cold root beer also helps keep us cool.

The kids are not taking part in New WAVE swim team for the summer, but we do have a family pass so all of us can go and swim. We spent some time at Triangle Aquatic Center yesterday afternoon swimming laps...in the cool, indoor pool. The water felt extra cold because we were so hot when we got there, but none of us were complaining. It's better than hanging out outside with the snakes and the lizards breaking heat records. :)
